Selamat Hari Guru :16 Mei
Selamat tengahari Cliffordians 73/78

We still remember sitting on the floor, looking up and listening wide-eyed to our teachers as they wore their magic - telling us the stories about "Minangkabau" or "Sleeping Beauty" or reading us a nursery rhyme "Row, row, row your boat....." or teaching us Mathematics till we doozed-off. Our reccess was filled with fun at the canteen and looking at colourful murals on the walls of Clifford Primary. We brought home stories about our teachers (all those beautiful ones in Primary) to our parents.

Dear Friends,....Today, as teachers, I sometimes feel we give scarce thought and priority to what our charges think of us. We assume that a teacher is vain and pretentious if one works towards being well-liked. We hear ourselves say, "I am not here to win a popularity contest. I'm to teach"

But honestly, how wrong we teachers are. The issue here is not one of popularity, it's one of personality and character.

We teachers should develop our personality such that our students truly respect and like us. We should give them not only learning but the joy of learning. They should enjoy being in our class. They should enjoy being with us and around us knowing that we respect them as students and at the same, be firm and serious in a condusive environment.

Remember, when the students learn something, there is often a magical quality about the excitement of discovery and a warmth of regard between teacher anf taught. Teachers who are firm bur fair and always stimulate interest will be well-liked. Is it worth the effort to work towards being well-loked. Personally, I believe the answer is resounding "YES"

If there's one thing that can truly keep up a teachers's faith and commitment, it is the warmth and love generated by students who really like him/her.

    SELAMAT HARI GURU

Salam Hormat
